THE PLAZA’S NEW owner offered a crowd-pleasing surprise yesterday as part of his plan to add pricey
apartments and a shopping mall to the world-famous hotel.
At the suggestion of the city Landmarks Preservation Commission, Miki Naftali will give the Palm Court a
magnificent stained-glass ceiling – a replica of the historic 1907 original that was torn down in the 1940s.
His firm, Elad Properties, bought the iconic hotel for $675 million last year and plans to turn more than half
its 800 hotel rooms into condos.
The commission voted unanimously yesterday to grant landmark protection to the Palm Court and other
Plaza interiors. The Grand Ballroom, the Oak Room and Oak Bar and the Palm Court will continue their traditional
uses as restaurants and party spaces.
